“Merite Serena – an intimate building at 9 Barbary Street designed by our studio, is located on the border of housing development transitioning into single-family housing. The architectural project was created with the idea of breaking away from typical visual and color solutions of the surroundings. All apartments are located to ensure maximum illumination through south-east-west exposure. Large balconies create additional living space, and gardens in all ground-floor apartments provide a recreational area. As designers, we do not replicate established schemes. We seek styling solutions that enhance the visual quality of the building. We aim to enrich the area with modern architecture, breaking the prevailing stylistic rhythm, to achieve a positive reception from residents of both the designed building and neighboring buildings. The guiding motif for creating the building's shape was the painting of Piet Mondrian, the precursor of geometric abstractionism, hence the characteristic horizontal and vertical lines of Mondrian divide the façade and interiors into rectangles and squares. A modern approach to architectural design should encourage recipients to seek new solutions that improve the surrounding space while leaving a testament to a given time in architecture.”
