Johow-Gelaende is the name of the former group of luxurious tenement houses located today between the streets: Matejki, Wyspianskiego, Ulanska and Grottgera, Chelmonskiego, Siemiradzkiego, and Kossaka, opposite the former Botanical Garden (now Wilson Park).

Its construction began in the early 20th century according to the innovative urban concept of Max Johow (the second was architect Emil Asmus), to which the design of a few years later in Berlin - Willmersdorf - significantly refers.

Elegant standard of tenement houses

The historical quarter of Johow-Gelaende was built with beautiful, impressive, and representative tenement houses. These were four-and five-storey properties reminiscent of palaces with luxurious apartments. It was not only the elegant standard of houses - stuccoes, marbles, stained glass, polychromes - that distinguished them from others. The tenement houses did not have outbuildings, which was a novelty at that time.

In front of the tenement houses, foregardens were designed, while in the back, courtyards served as common, often interestingly arranged green areas. The arrangement of the internal sides of the tenements was also innovative. Their parts were pushed towards the garden and alternately protruded into the retracted part of the house from the opposite street. This measure allowed light into the rooms whose windows faced the back of the tenement houses.

The building was conducted by various architects, mainly from Berlin, graduates of German schools. Hence, the main architectural style here is Art Nouveau. Interestingly, similar Berlin buildings were destroyed during the war, and examples of Berlin's Art Nouveau can be seen on Berlin postcards or ... in Poznan. The estate had an elite character, and the addressees of the premises were well-off individuals: officials, lawyers, high-ranking military officers, merchants, and doctors.
